JOB TITLE – AU JUNIOR TAX ACCOUNTANT
Build strong foundations. Deliver work that counts. We’re looking for a detail-focused Junior Tax Accountant who is ready to grow their Australian accounting career. You’ll prepare accurate working papers, financial statements, tax returns, and activity statements while supporting an onshore team and helping clients stay compliant.
Work Setup: Hybrid / WFH
Role Overview
As our Junior Tax Accountant, you’ll support the preparation of working papers and tax compliance reports for Australian clients across a range of industries. You’ll take ownership of core compliance tasks, collaborate closely with the onshore team, and progressively build your capability to handle more advanced work under the guidance of the Accounting Manager or Service Delivery Manager.
Key Responsibilities
· Prepare Accurate Working Papers: Review general ledger balances, reports, and transactions; complete working papers in line with client and Australian regulatory standards; and ensure files reflect the final financial statements.
· Produce Financial Statements: Prepare complete financial statements, year-end accrual reviews, job notes, trust distribution statements, and dividend statements where applicable.
· Complete Tax Returns: Draft tax returns in client-specified software, prepare tax reconciliations and tax provisions, claim appropriate deductions and offsets, and resolve validation errors before submission.
· Support ATO Compliance: Prepare and lodge monthly, quarterly, or annual Business Activity Statements and Instalment Activity Statements in accordance with client requirements.
· Keep Workflows Moving: Complete tax compliance checklists, manage assigned jobs against deadlines and budgeted hours, and maintain accurate daily timesheets in client systems.
· Raise Queries Early: Proactively identify gaps, inconsistencies, and opportunities in client records, then communicate clear queries and practical suggestions to the onshore team.
· Maintain Quality: Deliver complete, accurate working papers, job notes, financial statements, and tax returns with minimal supervision and in line with hammerjack and client quality standards.
· Keep Learning: Stay current with Australian accounting and taxation requirements, client processes, and accounting software through assigned work, self-study, and training.
Skills & Experience
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA qualification is preferred.
· 1–2 years of experience in Australian accounting and taxation.
· Working knowledge of Australian taxation, ATO compliance, and the preparation of financial statements and tax returns.
· Experience supporting Individual, Partnership, Trust, and Company compliance engagements.
· Hands-on experience with Xero, Xero Practice Manager, and Xero Workpapers; familiarity with MYOB and QuickBooks is an advantage.
· Confident using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with the ability to learn new systems quickly.
· Strong written and verbal English communication skills, including the ability to raise clear, timely queries.
· Highly organised, accurate, and dependable, with the ability to meet deadlines, work within budgeted hours, and deliver quality work with minimal supervision.
